Hartshill Academy

Welcome to Hartshill Academy?

Welcome to Hartshill Academy! We look forward to welcoming you as you join our school family and the Midland Academy Trust.

We are very proud of our school and hope you enjoy learning more about the wonderful opportunities and learning ahead of you

At Hartshill Academy we have high expectations of ourselves. We practice kindness and gratitude every day. Our school HART values of Heart, Ambition, Respect and Tenacity underpin everything we do. We take time to reflect on our HART values and how we can develop each day to ensure we are always challenging ourselves to be even better today than yesterday. We strive to practice perfect in everything we do. We know that our daily practices become our habits, our habits become our character and our character is who we are.

We have an aspirational knowledge rich curriculum for all pupils. As part of the Midland Academies Trust, our staff work collaboratively across the Trust to innovate and plan exciting and inspiring learning, enabling our pupils to leave Hartshill Academy with a lifelong love of learning. We ensure there is high challenge and high support for all pupils to ensure they can access and make excellent progress in all lessons. We work hard to ensure all pupils reach their full potential and leave Hartshill Academy with the skills and knowledge to make informed decision about their next steps. We have an excellent pastoral team who work closely with our families to ensure all pupils are supported so they can arrive to lessons ready to learn and make the most of the opportunities available to them each day.

Parental involvement in school is a key to every child’s success. Our parents collaborate with the school through parent voice, parents evenings, celebration events, shows, sports events and our pastoral support. All of these are important opportunities for us to support every child.

This is a very exciting time for Hartshill Academy as we prepare for the move to our new building in September 2023. We are very fortunate to be one of the 50 schools chosen nationally as part of this project and we are all looking forward to the new opportunities this will bring.

Meet our transition team- (who and what they do)

Miss C Wallbank- Yea7 Pastoral Leader

Miss Wallbank is the Pastoral Leader for all Year 7 pupils and she has high expectations for Year 7 demonstrating their HART values and behaviour for learning. Miss Wallbank is in regular communication with Year 7 parents and carers to ensure all pupils are supported with the transition to secondary school.

Mrs S Behan- Year 7 SLT Link

Support pupils from primary school to secondary school by liaising with primary teachers. Facilitating links between primary and secondary specialist teachers. Ms Behan organises events on and off site to support primary school enrichment learning with subject specialists leading in their subjects.  We offer opportunities to the secondary school pupils to support with transition lessons gaining leadership opportunities. Ms Behan liaises with the SEND coordinator, pastoral leader, and safeguarding team to ensure smooth transition for our younger pupils and parents.

Mrs L Stubbs- SENDCO

Mrs Stubbs works to ensure every child with SEND has their needs met. Mrs Stubbs collaborates with staff, parents, carers, external agencies and appropriate professionals and voluntary bodies. She ensures that support is co-ordinated and targeted appropriately, and that all are informed and updated about the progress of pupils with SEND and understand how best to help. Mrs Stubbs meets with each primary school to ensure plans are in place to ensure a smooth transition to secondary school

Ms A Hiatt- Safeguarding officer

Ms Hiatt supports pupils and families when there are safeguarding issues and concerns.  She works closely with our counsellors and external support agencies.

Pastoral support at Hartshill Academy

There are ten Pastoral Leaders at Hartshill Academy who support across the school. The Year 7 Pastoral Leader is Miss Chelsea Wallbank. Their role involves working with pupils, parents and external agencies. Miss Wallbank supports pupils and their families when needed to identify any barriers to learning. She will support pupils to address any issues and ensure all pupils attend school every day, arrive on time, equipped to learn and are ready to engage in their lessons and be successful. Miss Wallbank is very approachable, and pupils feel at ease talking to her knowing that she will do her best to support them.

We also have support from our Chaplin, our behaviour manager, our family liaison officer, our school counsellor and our school social worker to ensure all pupils needs are met.

SEND support at Hartshill Academy

SENCo stands for Special Educational Needs Coordinator. You may hear the name referred to in full, as its acronym (sometimes also written as SENDCo, standing for special educational needs and disabilities coordinator), or as SEN Coordinator.

SENCos are members of teaching staff who are responsible for special educational needs within a school, to ensure that every pupil who has SEND are supported to help them reach their full `potential.  Mrs Stubbs works with the pastoral team, staff and outside agencies to ensure we have the best support for our pupils.  Progress Coaches support pupils who need extra help in lessons and outside lessons.  Outside lesson support include; reading, social skills, and homework club.  We also deliver Direct Instruction lessons in English; this is a teacher driven teaching approach of presenting information to pupils for pupils who need intense support with decoding.

Year 5 Transition opportunities

Hartshill Academy offers opportunities for pupils on our school site and within their own school setting throughout the year.  Enrichment lessons from secondary subject specialists enhance the learning and connection between our schools.  This offers CPD opportunities to our primary school colleagues as well as secondary school subject specialists and equipment to enhance the learning for the Year 5 pupils.

Ms Behan and Miss Wallbank visit our local primary schools to deliver a presentation and to give pupils an opportunity to take part in our postcard competition with prizes to be won.

Year 5 Transition events are a great opportunity for pupils to come and experience some lessons and see first-hand what it is like in secondary school.  They will take part in hands on practical lessons using specialist equipment in lessons, such as science, design technology, food, art and PE.

Parents can make an appointment for a tour of the school, to see the working school in action during the day of after school and find out more about the opportunities at Hartshill Academy.

Year 6 Transition opportunities

Hartshill Academy welcomes Year 6 pupils who have selected us as their school of choice are invited to take part in our three transition days in July.  The helps to ease nerves, let them meet other pupils in their tutor group, start to learn their way around and sample some lessons before starting as a Year7.  The pupils can meet their teachers, tutor, and start to learn our routines, this will help them feel more confident and prepare them for a positive start in September.

Parents may book in a tour of the school with Ms Behan during the working school day or after school.

Parents of SEND or vulnerable children, and their child are offered extra visits with Mrs Stubbs (SENDCo), to support their needs.

Year 6 assemblies are delivered in the primary schools by Ms Behan and Miss Wallbank to help prepare and welcome the pupils who are coming to transition days and get them ready for an exciting start to Year 7.
