Why come to Heath Lane Academy?
Heath Lane Academy offers a vibrant, caring and aspirational learning environment for the young people of our community.
We pride ourselves on the high expectations we have of our students in everything that we do. Our school has improved significantly in recent years due to our ‘warm and strict’ approach. Our school culture demands that students are well behaved and demonstrate a positive attitude to their education. Students and staff understand that our strong culture gives our students the best possible chance to be successful in their lives.
As part of the Midland Academies Trust, we prioritise academic success for all of our students. We deliver an aspirational knowledge rich curriculum which is designed and implemented to ensure all of our students ‘graduate’ to aspirational destinations. Our staff work collaboratively across the Trust to innovate and plan exciting and inspiring learning, enabling our students to leave Heath Lane Academy with a lifelong love of learning.
Quote from a parent, “After a tough year 6, my daughter has settled in so well at Health Lane Academy. She has made so many new friends and is thriving in her learning. Seeing her confidence grow over the year has been lovely to watch. Thank you”.

SEND support at Heath Lane Academy
SENCo stands for Special Educational Needs Coordinator. You may hear the name referred to in full, as its acronym (sometimes also written as SENDCo, standing for special educational needs and disabilities coordinator), or as SEN Coordinator.
SENCos are members of teaching staff who are responsible for special educational needs within a school, to ensure that every child who has SEND are supported as well as to help them reach their full educational potential. Mrs S Mitchell links with the pastoral team, staff and outside agencies to gain the best support for our pupils. Teacher assistants support pupils who need extra help in lessons and outside lessons. Outside lesson support include; reading, handwriting, and homework club. We also deliver Direct Instruction lessons which are lessons; this is a teacher driven teaching approach of presenting information to pupils, this is highly successful, and Heath Lane Academy is leading on this across the Trust.
Year 5 Transition opportunities
Heath Lane Academy offers opportunities for pupils on our school site and within their own school setting throughout the year. Enrichment lessons from secondary subject specialists enhance the learning and connection between our schools. This also supports the primary school staff gaining CPD moments whilst exciting the pupils into looking forward to coming to Heath Lane Academy.
Mr Trimingham and Mrs Ley visit our local primary schools to deliver a presentation and to give pupils an opportunity to take part in our postcard competition with prizes to be won. This links with our Peek at a Day event later in the year.
Peek at a Day in the summer term is a great opportunity for pupils to come and experience some lessons and see first-hand what it is like in secondary school. They will take part in hands on practical lessons using specialist equipment in lessons, e.g. Science, Design, Food, Art, PE and others. The pupils will gain a feel of the changes they will quickly adjust to when moving up to secondary school such as moving from lesson to lesson, having subject specialists for different lessons.
We offer taster lessons at Heath Lane Academy throughout the year for year groups again on site or at their school, these may include, PE, Science, Food, Design and many more.
We offer sports opportunities/tournaments, pupils start to meet pupils from other primary schools and have a focus to work on at their school before competing and enjoying these events. Linking in with the summer events of the Platinum Jubilee we had primary schools take part in Rounders tournament and then sitting together to have drinks and cake. All pupils took home memorabilia from the days event.
Parents can make an appointment for a tour of the school with our Principal Mr Trimingham, to see the working school in action during the day of after school and find out more about the opportunities at our school.
Quote from one of our local primary school teachers: “Could you please pass on our thanks to all of the children who came to help at our Jubilee day on Friday 27th May. They were an absolute credit to all of the staff, their parents and themselves. They were so helpful, friendly and kind to our children and to each other. They joined in with everything they were asked to do and it was fantastic to see how they have continued to grow into wonderful young people.
Year 6 Transition opportunities
Heath Lane welcomes year 6 pupils who have selected us as their school of choice are invited to take part in our two transition days in June. The helps to ease nerves, let them meet other pupils in their tutor group, start to learn their way around and sample some lessons before starting as a year7. The pupils can meet their teachers, tutor, and start to learn our routines, this will help them feel more confident and prepare them for a positive start.
Parents may book in a tour of the school with our Principal Mr Trimingham during the working school day or after school.
Parents of SEND or vulnerable children, and their child are offered extra visits with Mrs S Mitchell (SEND co-ordinator), and liaising to support their needs.
Taster lessons are also offered early in the year for enrichment opportunities.
Year 6 assemblies are delivered by Mrs S Ley and Mrs Dorman to help prepare and welcome the pupils who are coming to transition days and get them ready for an exciting start as a year 7.
Quote from one of our primary school teachers, “the year 6 pupils who had the extra visit really enjoyed the morning, having a tour, meeting the teachers and making new friends. It was lovely to see them more relaxed about coming to secondary school”
